PDP – Personal Development Plan

 

Level 5 constellation has certainly felt more purposeful. Having finished Level 4 with much confusion, lack of enjoyment and, motivation for the module, I was apprehensive for Level 5. However, I was pleased to discover that Level 5 consisted of a slightly different dynamic with term 2 allowing more freedom for the type of avenue wished to explore not only in theme, but in method of presenting/academically writing too.

 

A mixture of my first term study group, Relational Ways of Knowing, with the second terms Research Proposal’s focused tutorials, tailored both in groups and on a one to one basis, have grounded a lot of my understanding and knowledge in terms of the wider purpose of constellation and how it links not only constellation study groups, but to Field, and Subject modules too to ground all of my skills and knowledge as a practicing creative professional in order bring everything together to write a purposeful Research Proposal that not only means something to me but, I can also take forward when entering the world of work. Having undertaken a module titled ‘Beyond The Barcode’ during Field, I developed a passion for business and combining my Subject of Product Design giving me the ability to create a brand for for my product(s) as well as other parts of a business such as financing and marketing. I was then able to channel this new found passion into my Constellation work in developing a business plan that I genuinely enjoyed researching and writing about. Not only that, but I can then take and use this plan in moving forward after my degree giving me the ability to start my own business as a career. And if not, having an intuitive piece of work such as a business plan is a great thing to show an employer too. I feel like I have certainly developed and built upon many skills during the course of this module. Being introduced to a new topic during the first subject group and new methods for analysing sources/case studies in a methodological way certainly helped me enabling me to apply these skills in my own piece of writing and research. I now know little tricks in helping with this academic writing such as having the ability to identify sections of sources that will be most helpful rather than reading and highlighting a whole book as I did before. I enjoyed and benefited from the mix of case studies such as The White painted trees of Kefelonia, Stuat Walker’s ‘sustainable by design’ and the Eleanor Hawkins examples – although all very different, these helped ground my ideas and understandings as well as got me thinking in different ways and analysing different styles as well as having the ability to work with and learn from a mix of different practice groups seeing what ideas and thought process’ different people brought to the table.

 

Moving onto my critical writing piece for the first term, I decided to write a piece titled ‘The Gucci Stoma Bag’ which explored how looking at a design problem from animistic, naturalistic and ecological views that I developed understandings for during the study group, could conclude how, or how not, the use of these different views could be used as a tool for improved empathetic design. I really enjoyed finally having some freedom over my topics for discussion and the ability to relate it back to something of interest and personal to me.

 

Taking on board my feedback comments along with my own personal reflections, I decided that I was confident in some of my ideas and was able to relate to the overall theme. However, I feel like I could have better connected with the topic and some of the points I made for discussion. I could have expanded and better argued them with stronger context and case studies – I feel that this was partly down to the fact that some of these theories, vocabularies and ideas were very new to me for example the animistic, ecological and naturalistic views. I still felt partly distanced from what they actually meant to me and what I actually wanted to be writing about.

 

It was also clear from my own reflections and from my feedback that I needed to better some of my academic writing skills and include more detail in my references as well as a bibliography. In moving forward, I’ve attended a tutorial with Martha Ashford, our librarian, and been using the website Cite them Right as a tool for referencing correctly. I’ve tried to correctly include all relevant details within my work this time around as well as having provided a bibliography. I understand that this still may not have been executed perfectly however, I certainly feel more confident in this area and that I have a better understanding of academic writing in the style that the university work within. I feel like my writing, researching and working style has definitely developed from that of Alevel and my previous constellation submissions to where it is now in developing my research proposal.

 

I now feel very differently towards constellation, I can appreciate the theories and methods taught over the last year or two despite not having completely understanding or connecting with them on occasions. I remember Martyn Woodward telling us to trust the process, stick at it and eventually, we’d reap the rewards – I feel this very true of constellation as a whole now having written my Research Proposal and moving forward to writing my dissertation I can appreciate the process and feel equipped in moving forward independently.

 

I plan to be ahead and organised in moving forward with the writing of my dissertation piece itself, I have already identified some additional further reading and sources that I plan to use in order to create what I feel is the best piece of research/writing that I can in order to answer my question. I plan to continue building upon what I’ve learned and submitted during my Easter and Summer breaks, so that I return at level 6 confident and prepared to finish and submit my dissertation piece.

EMPATHETIC MEDICAL DESIGN – RESEARCH INTO LITERATURE

As mentioned previously, I have had a discussion with both Clara and Richard from the Product Design department with regards to making a start in the right direction into where to look for useful information and case studies.

The Heath hospital Cardiff children’s ward – The new approach they’ve taken into empathetic design within their different hospital spaces. How have they achieved this and what are the results?

The Heath health board spaces for mental health patients – the approach thats been taken here to improve the quality and safety of these spaces. The well thought through, considered design down to every detail to ensure each product is safe eg peaked roofed wardrobes so that things can’t be hidden on top of them.

I aim to contact the Heath (I already have some involvement and contact there) and explain my situation/dissertation proposal and ask them Kindly for a small tour.

Because its empathetic medical design, I’ve found that this is rather different to medical design when searching for literature – I feel like I need to broaden my horizon and start looking at literature from the health sciences department. Although there may not be full books on the topics I’m looking for, they’re likely to have sections that might contain bits about medical design and, empathetic medical design.

Also, I plan to utilise the accessibility I have of the community of people I have access to who’ve got these illness’ and, have undergone stoma surgery by asking them specific questions – I could create a questionnaire in the field of medical design for empathy and distribute it within this targeted community to form a part of my own primary research.

There are so many helpful and meaningful articles / journals on IDEO’s website when searching ’empathetic design’ and ‘medical design for empathy’ – I aim to read and make relevant notes on all of these in order to pick out the key information and points to use.

 

I’ve found that a lot of the journals and literature use different terminology to describe the name for the gap that is finding the perfect position for the description of having a professional design knowledge and, having an empathetic design perspective. I plan to note each of these to be able to hopefully, come to my own understanding and terminology for what exactly this ‘gap’ is to be able to form my own understanding/position.

I discussed all of the above in todays tutorial with Martyn, despite being dissappointed by the lack of work I had to present due to an extremely busy week within subject and Field modules.

We discussed through my ideas and decided it be best to define some new key words in order to better refine my literature research and try and open up some more doors in the types of results that I get.

Decided that I need to explain / research Medical design and then Empathetic design and discuss the gap there is between these. I then need to define and ‘humanise’ this gap and present/introduce it as a gap for research/gap in the market/gap for understanding. This is where my enquiry and research will be.

I need to begin by explaining all of the above before I can move on to explaining why it is relevant and furthermore, what I will use to explain/explore this – I need to stop getting carried away with my thoughts and ideas and jumping straight to a final piece of work/conclusion. I need to stop being so precious initially and understand that there will e drafts and changes in developments/ideas.

CONSTELLATION – DISSERTATION PREPERATION

Following my previous post, I think I’ve pretty much set my mind on concentrating on producing a business plan for my dissertation. My current Field module is heavily business and business designing/marketing based and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it and found it extremely interesting. As a result of this module, I’ve built a good understanding and ground knowledge for the research required in the planning and starting of the business for example competitor brands/markets, target markets, promotional strategies etc as well as some of the techniques behind the visuals and key features for example logo/name/strapline , social media and website design, product/merchandise design and moving on from this, the marketing and promotional strategies involved including trends, hashtags, social media layout, designing adverts, influencers etc. I will use all of this knowledge/understanding to continue building upon it and therefore, be able to include some supported literature and explanation on this part of the business in my dissertation proposal.

Having spoken to Martyn with regards to potentially doing a business plan instead, he explained that Sarah runs the study group focusing on the writing and creation of business plans so I thought I’d firstly check out her Moodle page to see if I could find any starting information here. Here I found a Ted Talks video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZoJKF_VuA , I thoroughly enjoy these as it is so decided to listen/watch it twice over to try and gain a thorough understanding of what was being said. Essentially, Simon Senek in his talk ‘How great leaders inspire action’ he discusses how successful ideas/business are created by using an inside out approach instead thus better connecting with the customer and an identified problem/solution. This was very interesting, in particularly some of the case studies he uses including Apple, Dell and many other business’. In the grand scheme, this isn’t too dissimilar to my business idea and where it has stemmed from so, I will definitely be referring back to this and possibly some of the examples used within my own work and research. I learned that you have to be thoroughly connected and really believe in and feel for what it is that you’re trying to do/create in order for others to feel for and believe in what you’re doing too. I feel this is definitely relevant in my case, delving into the field and business of medical/inclusive design having had direct contact with this world for the past ten years of my life and will continue to have contact and be part of this world for the remaining future.

I’ve also started by reading some past examples of business plans in the form of dissertations within the creative industry to gain a better understanding of what it is that I will be writing and the kind of format that it will follow.

I think my biggest downfall at this point is the critical part of the paper and how I will critically engage with the topic in order to relate back to why exactly this business plan exists and in turn, why/how it will stand out and be successful.  Unfortunately, my health has taken a turn for the worst again over the last couple of weeks which has taken a lot of my time for research and exploration away from me. However, I’m going to ty not to let this hinder my progress too much and start doing research into what literature exists in this field already and detect some wider reading that I can begin doing in order to broaden my knowledge and support my work. I will try and note/record these findings in this part of my blog so that I can concisely find and refer back to this initial research all in one place.

A very broad, initial explanation of my concept, which I will use as a starting point for my further reading and research focuses on EMPATHETIC MEDICAL DESIGN / EMPATHETIC DESIGN WITHIN THE FIELD OF ILLNESS / CHRONIC ILLNESS. I will research into how a better empathetic approach can be taken in this sector could transform user experience, the perspectives of a wider circle of people, stigmas etc. I will focus on IBD (irritable bowel disease) and the stoma bag but am open to research case studies within a broader field of empathetic design/medical design to begin with.

I have emailed Clara Watkins, course leader for product design and also researcher into medical design to see if she can point me in the right direction of useful literature for my research. I plan to have a better discussion with her a little further down the line as I feel she could provide great insight into this subject field as she specialises in design within the medical industry and has a lot of involvement within this field.

CONSTELLATION – TERM 2 DISSERTATION RESEARCH / PLANNING

I’m not going to lie, I was partly dreading my first tutorial back with regards to constellation / my dissertation. I didn’t complete as much prep work for it as I would have liked to over Christmas as I was still rather confused as to what I wanted to focus on or what direction to head in although I was pleased to discover that Martyn is my supervisor as I really enjoyed his teaching style last term and seemed to click well with him. Having been studying a business focused topic in my Field module over the past weeks, and thoroughly enjoying it, I’ve been seriously debating shifting the focus of my dissertation to a business plan instead.

I enjoyed the tutorial and was glad to discover that some of my product design peers had been placed in the same group as me. I was intrigued to listen to their ideas and see how everyone had taken a different approach to the task. I really enjoyed discussing through the different ideas and contributing extra ideas and opinions and vice versa, was intrigued to find out about what others thought of my idea. I made sure to take lots of notes during this discussion. I definitely feel like I have a bit of a clearer idea now of what is required for this submission and what stages I need to work through. I’m pleased Martyn liked my idea and believes that it is a strong concept for dissertation focus however, now need to make my mind up on what format dissertation I would like to write. I’m currently swaying towards the business plan idea however, aim to do some more research over the next week or two in order to help develop my ideas and make my mind up.

 

 

Once I have made my decision, I will get in touch with Martyn to let him know so that we can decide on whats best to do in moving forward with preparing this submission.

RELATIONAL WAYS OF KNOWING – LEARNING JOURNAL

Learning Journal  

 

In all honesty, I was apprehensive to begin this study group. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how it applied to my course subject having never studied anything similar before. However, I was looking forward to opening up to a new way of thinking and hopefully, developing some new thoughts and ideas over the coming weeks.

Having attended the first weeks study group, it is fair to say that despite having some understanding on the topics discussed, my confusion remained in terms of how I could relate some of these new ways of thinking back to my subject practice of product design. I developed an understanding for both Naturalistic and Animistic views and found the Eleanor Hawkins case study particularly interesting especially now having a better understanding of analysing the case from both perspectives. I could now appreciate and understand the case study from both sides of the story. The case study and first study session of this module definitely opened my eyes to a broader approach of the world – to think deeper beyond what obviously lies in front of the eye or what you’ve personally been brought up to perceive within your own culture. Things don’t always appear just as they are and, equally, what appears as something to one person, may not appear as the same thing to another – this is something to be remembered and respected when taking viewpoints particularly as an outsider. It is not as simple and straight forward as it may initially seem as there are many factors that play a role in this understanding and interpretation of the world for example, cultural, environmental and historical. This got me thinking about how the products I design and how that if they are not considered carefully in their design, could be interpreted wrongly by the users depending on their cultural backgrounds and beliefs – what looks like a product with a certain function to one person, may look like a product with a completely different meaning or function to another. I should carry this understanding over into my practice and take consideration of it into my work whether it be subtly or purposefully done. Despite still being a little confused, I trusted Martyn when he suggested things may not initially make sense but to stick at it. So, I was looking forward to developing and unfolding my understandings and ideas.

The second week introduced a theory that I could definitely gel with better, an ecological theory of nature that merged elements of the technological age/naturalistic approach and the animistic theories to suggest that actually, everything is interconnected in a mesh to develop an ecological awareness that lies in the middle. I feel as if this is the theory that describes my own perspective best.

This week included a group task – As a group of three (two product designers and one artist designer maker) we decided it best that we split to carry out our own research into the White Painted Trees of Kefalonia  o begin with and then re-join to share our findings and discuss the direction in which the research may take us. I enjoyed the sporadic approach to this task and the fact that there was no right or wrong – any meshwork could be relevant if you made it. I found it particularly interesting to see the different dynamics within the study group and how that different subject practices seemed to take different view points and have better understandings within some views than others. For example, as a product designer, I feel that the naturalistic and/or ecological approaches are certainly easier relatable and understandable however, I could see that the animistic approach was grasped far easier by some of the more art based subjects such as fine art and artist designer maker. I really enjoyed listening to the different groups presentations and trying to understand how everyone had got to such different points for their presentations, it really intrigued me.

I think the third week was the turning point for me in really understanding and getting to grips with the study groups’ focus – particularly after reading the extract from ‘Sustainable by Design’ by Stuart Walker, everything seemed to click and piece together. I was able to appreciate and understand the text from no longer only my previous perspective, from an undergrad Product Designers point of view, but, now from all three animistic, naturalistic and ecological perspectives too. It was as if I was reading the text with a whole new light and from that, able to begin deciding where my personal perspective and views sat between the three. Although maybe at the beginning, I couldn’t get my head around perhaps some of the animistic views and theories for example, although it’s still likely that I won’t ever believe in this way, I can now understand and appreciate this way of thinking and am able to embed this within my thought process when analysing a text or an object. I think this will definitely show in my future subject work too as it’ll be something I’ll consider when designing in comparison to before, when it was quite self-centred in terms of my thought process’.

After finally beginning to get my head around things in the third week, I began considering topics to concentrate my critical writing on.  I was able to generate ideas and map out what they might include and where they may lie in terms of the theories they use – however, still lied slightly confused about where to begin and what direction to head in despite finding the critical writing workshop useful. Even if my first attempt at this critical piece of writing hasn’t been the simplest or easiest to go about or, the most successful, I feel as if I have been successful in moulding my way of understanding and thinking over the course of this study group – something very valuable in itself I believe.
